Victorian Portraits

I wanted to photograph women in my life, and represent them with empowerment.

Thinking about the frame of the photograph, I wanted to consider the relationship between an image and its interpretation. Historically, frames have been used to imply wealth and social status with increasingly ornate, and detailed decorations.

I also wanted to use thread because it has been an important tool that has connected me with other women. I made friendship bracelets, trading designs and techniques with my friends. My mom taught me to sew my first t-shirt using a thin, electric purple thread (which, with the material I had chosen, was decidedly not a great choice).
